Wednesday's Woe

Have You Ever...?

10 Questions for Folks Who Want to Give Advice to Grieving Parents

by Tommy and Angie Prince

When you as a child-loss parent are rendered speechless by the audacity of someone who wants to tell you that you are doing grief "wrong" or that you should be over "it" by now, wouldn't it be nice to have some 3 x 5 cards made up to hand to them:

"Answer these first, and then we'll talk..."

(This list is just a start to the long list that could be made that might begin to bring the reality home to others of what child-loss grief is really like for a grieving parent....)

10 Questions for Folks Who Want to Give Advice to Grieving Parents

  • Have you ever had to figure out what to put on your child's tomb stone?
  • Have you ever had to face a child's birthday, knowing your child will never be there ever again to celebrate it with you?
  • Have you ever had to celebrate a child's birthday in a cemetery?
  • What do you think your Christmas would be like with one of your children forever missing?
  • How is that Thanks-giving working for you when you look around the table and once again are startled by the presence of your child's absence?
  • Have you ever prayed for the safety of your child, only to find out she was killed?
  • Have you ever had to face the world's worst loss, but feel betrayed by the only One who can get you through it?
  • Have you ever felt betrayed by your own subconscious that tells you in your dream your child is alive, only to have to wake up and face "hell" all over again?
  • Have you ever had to pick out a coffin for your child?
  • Have you ever had to decide whether you're going to see your child's dead body or not?
